My 6-year-old Sheltie started developing arthritis in her hind leg, due to degeneration from a severe sprain when she was a puppy. Her leg stiffened when she laid down for any length of time, she walked with a pronounced limp and occasionally even held the leg off the ground when standing. She was obviously in pain, and would decline to come investigate when the other dogs barked at something or started to play; she would just stay lying down and looking sad. :(
Rymadil didn't really help, and because of the severe potential side-effects, I was uncomfortable keeping her on it for minimal improvement. My vet recommended a glucosamine supplement, and after reading reviews on multiple sites and comparing ingredient lists, I decided on Cosequin Soft Chews Plus--and I am SO glad I did! She LOVES the taste--scarfs the "treat" down, and reminds me (by jumping up and down next to the cookie jar!) if she thinks I have forgotten to give it to her after breakfast.
After about two weeks on the starting dose (2 treats per day instead of the maintenance dose of 1), we started to see a noticeable improvement. Now, a little over a month after starting treatment, her limp is almost gone, and she is visibly happier and more involved around the house, running and playing like she used to. Who would have thought a simple (if a bit stinky!) treat could have made such a difference
They're a bit expensive, but it's totally worth it--it can't hurt to try, so I would definitely recommend you buy a bag of 60 and try 2 a day for a month...hopefully your pup will improve as drastically as mine did, and you'll become a dedicated customer like I am
UPDATE:
I ran out of these for about ten days or so. During that time, Piper's limp returned; she stopped showing interest in games, and yelped a couple times when standing up after a long nap. She obviously knew what was up, as she kept wandering mournfully over to the empty jar looking for her magic treats. My reorder finally arrived (that's what I get for not ordering through Amazon)--we've been giving her the starting dose (2 treats) again for just TWO DAYS, and she is already visibly less stiff, and running, jumping, and playing again. I have learned my lesson for sure, and will never be without these again!

My chihuahua pomeranian mix has luxating patellas (sliding kneecaps), which were causing his back legs to be very stiff and painful. He stopped being active and wouldn't climb stairs. I started the chews as instructed, and within two weeks I noticed a difference. My dog is moving much more quickly now, and he seems to have more energy. He also just seems to be happier, which makes me think the chews have really helped with his arthritic pain. His legs are definitely not as stiff anymore either. I am really happy with this product.
